Cougars Embattled Too

USC won’t be the only team trying to recover from a shock Saturday night in Pullman, Wash.

Washington State, suffering its first loss in Martin Stadium in nine games, was humiliated by Oregon, 51-29.

The disaster is prompting a change at quarterback for the Cougars, who lost Ryan Leaf to the NFL.

Paul Mencke, a sophomore, will replace junior Steve Birnbaum, the starter in the first six games, Coach Mike Price told a local newspaper.

After going to the Rose Bowl last season for the first time in 67 years, Washington State is off to an 0-3 start in the Pac-10.

The Cougars gave up 527 yards to Oregon’s high-powered offense, and committed 160 yards’ worth of penalties.

USC hasn’t lost in Pullman since 1986, and has only lost to Washington State six times in 58 meetings, most recently 28-21 last season at the Coliseum.
