Funds Approved for City Permit Center
The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday approved nearly $500,000 to renovate and upgrade the one-stop permit center at the Van Nuys Civic Center next to the Building and Safety Department’s office.
The council authorized $470,000 to alleviate overcrowding and inadequate service problems at the permit center, said Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski, who wrote the motion.
The Van Nuys Construction Service Center was set up nearly 12 years ago to house permit-granting agencies, such as the fire, building and safety, engineering and police departments, under one roof, Miscikowski said. The renovation, scheduled to begin immediately, is aimed at improving the process for people seeking construction permits.
“It will be very, very business and user friendly,” the councilwoman said. “It will be able to be integrated into what will be the new civic center in about two years.”
About $233,000 will be used to double the capacity of the public area space and seating, increase the public counter length, increase public counter functions by 50%, and redesign the layout to improve overall flow and efficiency.
The remaining money will be used for upgrading computer systems and moving some building and safety staff members to a temporary site at 14651 Oxnard St. The project is expected to be finished in 60 to 90 days.
