Jury Backs Prisoner in Guard Abuse Case

A federal jury in Boston awarded $37,500 to an inmate who said a man he shot in the head in 1991 became a prison guard and tormented him behind bars. Zeferino DePina, 24, claimed that prison officials did nothing while Filipe Monteiro harassed and beat him at the maximum-security state prison at Walpole. The jury ordered Supt. Ronald Duval to pay $25,000. Monteiro was ordered to pay $5,000. Prison officials, who argued that the inmate was to blame, said they will appeal.
