Council OKs Plan for Retail and Entertainment Complex
Eleven years after a controversial office tower was approved for Westchester, the Los Angeles City Council agreed Friday to replace it with a dramatically different development: a $60-million entertainment and retail complex.
Councilwoman Ruth Galanter, whose district includes the property on Sepulveda Boulevard just south of Culver City, said the developer has agreed to drastically revamp the project by abandoning plans for the office building.
Dubbed the Promenade, the development had come under fire from some community members who argued that the community didn’t need a so-called fun zone. They complained that the movie theaters, shops and restaurants would increase traffic congestion, among other problems.
The developer, J.H. Snyder Co., agreed to a $250,000 “neighborhood protection plan” to address traffic concerns and to limit the height of some structures, among other things.
The center will have an 18-screen movie complex, including an IMAX theater, and a Nordstrom Rack as well as other stores and restaurants.
