Roman Catholic authorities must do more to speed up the promotion of women in the church, according to a policy statement by the U.S. Bishops Committee on Women in Society. But the bishops did not challenge the church’s position prohibiting women’s ordination.

The statement released Oct. 12 calls on church leaders to “appreciate and incorporate the gifts of women in the church,” and to appoint women to church leadership positions such as administrative posts in Catholic schools and hospitals. It also urges efforts to “promote collaboration between women and men in the church.”
