ORANGE COUNTY EARNINGS

Newport Corp.: The Irvine manufacturer of electronic components posted third-quarter net income of $2.2 million, or 24 cents a share, 22% higher than the $1.8 million, or 19 cents a share, for the third quarter of 1997. Sales were up 2% to $33.5 million from $32.7 million.
