Mandela Reviving Congo Peace Efforts

President Nelson Mandela is again trying to mediate a peaceful solution to the conflict in Congo, formerly known as Zaire. Mandela has scheduled a series of meetings this week with key players in the civil war, in which rebels backed by Rwanda and Uganda are battling President Laurent Kabila and his southern African allies. Mandela met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and will hold talks this week with Rwandan Vice President Paul Kagame. He will also meet with Congolese rebel leaders. Zimbabwe said Kabila’s allies will meet this week to plot strategy.
