Sand Replenishment on Beach to Resume

Share

A project bringing in 100,000 tons of sand to the beach resumed this week, replenishing an area that has eroded to “crisis” proportions, according to city officials.

The $1.1-million project was started last fall and is half completed. Officials placed the program on hold this past summer because of beach crowds.

Before the program began, the beach on the southeast side of the pier had seriously eroded, threatening private property and making the beach a less desirable place for recreation, said City Manager Keith Till.

The state is providing $813,000 of the project’s cost, with the rest paid by the city.
