A Royal Navy submarine is headed to waters off the coast of Point Mugu Naval Air Station to conduct tests of Tomahawk cruise missiles, a Navy spokeswoman said Saturday.

The British sub Splendid left Scotland Oct. 2 and is expected to arrive in the next two weeks at a test area about 500 miles off the coast of Point Mugu, Navy spokeswoman Cathy Partusch said.

Launching of the missiles will begin on an undisclosed date in November and will run through late December, officials said. The number of missiles to be tested and the flight paths were not released.

The targets could include sites on San Clemente Island, Partusch said.

The British government has purchased the missiles and related equipment from the United States for more than $300 million, Partusch said. The missiles use a satellite-guidance system and can fly up to 1,000 miles at low altitudes.
