Soon people will be dancing, holding meetings, even tying the knot in the city’s long-awaited, $2.5-million Community Center.

A year’s worth of construction on the 14,000-square-foot center, in the works since 1990, is expected to be completed Monday.

A grand opening celebration is set for Nov. 22, according to Kristi Silverberg, the city’s public information officer.

The Community Center will offer classes on everything from yoga to Latin dancing, and will include a senior citizens lounge and a game room.

There will also be conference and meeting rooms available for community use. A community hall will provide 4,200 square feet of space, with seating for up to 300. The city’s Community Services staff members will be based at the center.

Funds for the project came from the Open Space Bond Measure and private contributions, according to officials.

The Community Center is the first phase of a bigger project that will eventually include a gymnasium and an 11,000-square-foot Boys and Girls Club headquarters.

Work on the second phase is expected to begin soon.
