L.A. Among Recipients of Clean Air Awards
The city of Los Angeles and 11 businesses, public agencies and residents were rewarded Wednesday for their work in helping clean the nation’s dirtiest air.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued its 10th annual Clean Air Awards at a celebration that marked five decades of battling smog in the Los Angeles region.
Los Angeles was cited for spearheading a program called Quick Charge L.A., a partnership of 29 public agencies and companies that are installing nearly 200 charging stations for electric vehicles throughout the city. City Councilwoman Ruth Galanter said the $3.5-million project will turn Los Angeles into the “foremost EV-friendly city in the world.”
Pomona resident Hector Rodriguez won a Clean Air Award for volunteer work over the past four years, including efforts to help spread the word about clean-air programs to Spanish-speaking communities. Bank of America won for its ambitious employee ride-share program, while UCLA’s Transportation Services was chosen for its efforts to reduce traffic congestion with vanpools, clean-fuel buses and other services.
Other winners were the city of Azusa’s transportation division, James G. Edwards of Innovative Environmental Products, Sunlaw Cogeneration Partners, Costco Wholesale, Emily Nelson of the Coachella Valley Assn. of Governments, Omnitrans in San Bernardino, the Long Beach Bike Station and GTE Directories Corp.
Posthumous awards went to former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley and Carl B. Moyer, chief scientist for Acurex Corp., a Mountain View consulting company.
