Child Support Unit May Create Ombudsman Post

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has ordered county officials to examine the feasibility of creating an ombudsman for the district attorney’s child support unit.

“There has to be a recourse for an individual whose rights have been violated, where they can jump-start the process to get it resolved,” Supervisor Mike Antonovich said.

He cited a case of a man who had to save money for months for a court appearance to prove that Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti’s office had taken too much child support from his paycheck.

Supervisor Gloria Molina cautioned that the ombudsman post should not interfere with efforts by the supervisors to hold Garcetti accountable for his operation.

“People should have a place to go to and it should be us,” Molina said. “People should go to our offices and we should hold Gil Garcetti and [child support director] Wayne Doss responsible.”

The board is also awaiting a report from the district attorney’s office on a host of problems revealed in a recent series in The Times.
