Mexican masters such as Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco will be featured along with European-born American painters in an exhibit to open Sunday at the Ojai Valley Museum.

“Mexican Mentors, a Celebration of Mexican Art and Influence,” which will run through Jan. 1, will include a lecture series and family programs.

The exhibit will contain previously unexhibited work by Rivera, Orozco, Cantu and Chucho Reyes along with works by Ely de Vescovi and Michael Kelly.

“It’s the first time we’ve done anything like this,” Kelly said. “I think for anyone who has any interest in Mexican or Latin American art, this is the first time they’ll see material of this caliber out of Los Angeles County or the national museums.”

Born in 1950 in Wales, Kelly is a fourth-generation artist who specializes in Latin American themes and iconography and early Renaissance subjects. The Ojai exhibit will include paintings and pen and ink drawings from his years in Mexico.
