Pinochet Granted Bail--With Strings
Former Chilean dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet, held on Spanish allegations of genocide, terrorism and torture during his rule in Chile, won bail but is not going anywhere. The High Court ruled that Pinochet, 82, is immune from prosecution as a former head of state, but it added that he cannot leave the country until prosecutors appeal the ruling to a five-judge tribunal in the House of Lords. Pinochet was arrested by British authorities two weeks ago on a warrant seeking his extradition, issued by the Spanish magistrate.
