900 Athletes Expected for Special Olympics

More than 900 Special Olympics athletes from 11 counties will compete in a season-ending championship Oct. 17 at the Fountain Valley Recreation Center and other locations.

Competitions include softball, roller skating and bowling. The event will open with the lighting of the Flame of Hope and a recital of the Games' oath.

Finals will also be held at Fountain Valley Bowl and Fountain Valley Skate.

This is the third year the city has hosted the event, whose participants generally have mental or physical disabilities. Events are held throughout the year.

Opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. at the Recreation Center, 16400 Brookhurst St.
