Georges Becomes 4th Hurricane of Season
Georges became the fourth hurricane of the Atlantic season as it raced toward the Caribbean with 75-mph winds, but it was no immediate threat to land, forecasters in Miami said. The National Hurricane Center cautioned residents of the Lesser Antilles to monitor the storm’s progress closely but said it was days from the nearest land. Georges, the seventh tropical storm of the 1998 Atlantic season, was the fourth to reach hurricane strength. Hurricane Earl hit the Florida panhandle this month, killing at least three people. Hurricane Danielle faded in the Atlantic and Bonnie struck at Cape Fear, N.C., in late August, killing two people and causing $1 billion in damage.
