Teacher Pay

Re “New Era at School Board,” editorial, April 15: I deeply resent your almost automatic addition of the adjective “greedy” when discussing any aspect of union activities in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

My recent raise of 2% netted me $49 a month. From that, I plunked down $275, along with scores of other teachers, to take a university course on phonics instruction in reading. Greedy!? I don’t think so.

To attract quality professionals to a field, you have to offer a decent salary and working conditions. Why would you begrudge teachers asking for that?
