Social Security

Kathy Kristof advises a reader wondering whether Social Security is paying her the right amount to buy a $10 book that offers work sheets and an explanation to individuals on how the system works [Personal Finance, July 7]. The Social Security Administration offers this same information for free. An individual can call our toll-free number, (800) 772-1213, or visit one of our field offices, and a representative can explain what earnings and formula were used to compute his or her benefits.

In addition, individuals seeking an estimate of what their benefits will be can request this information on the Internet at https://www.ssa.gov and a statement of their earnings and estimates of future benefits will be mailed to them.

Many people are already receiving these statements. Beginning in October, all workers over the age of 25 with earnings posted to their records will receive a Social Security statement every year. This is a valuable tool to help individuals plan for retirement and should be read carefully when they get it in the mailbox.
