No More Slip-Ups

Slips and falls are a major hazard for older Americans. As we age, our reaction time slows; our muscles and joints grow stiffer; and illness, medications and vision changes pose more problems. In some cases, falls can be so serious that they may leave some seniors unable to live on their own.

Here are some recommendations to make the home safer to live in:

Floors

* Put nonskid pads under area rugs.

* Remove throw rugs.

* Replace worn floor coverings.

* Tack carpets firmly to each step on carpeted stairs. Put nonskid strips on the edges of uncarpeted stairs.

* Keep floors and stairs free of clutter and cords.

* Arrange furniture so there are clear pathways.

* Clean up any spills immediately.

Bathrooms

* Install grab bars in the tub or shower.

* Apply nonskid strips or put a nonskid rubber mat in the tub or shower.

* When bathing, sit on a bath chair.

* Use bath mats with nonskid backing.

Lighting

* Keep a flashlight in each room of your home.

* Use night lights, such as along the pathway from the bedroom to the bathroom.

Protecting Yourself

* Stay fit: Exercising three times a week or so can help keep your joints and muscles strong and flexible.

* Move carefully: Use handrails when going up and down stairs. Wear sturdy nonslip shoes and slippers.

* Keep things within easy reach: Put the things you use most on counters or in drawers or on shelves at about waist level. When reaching for items above your head, use reachers or grabbers.

* Make sure you know the side effects of medications you take; some can cause dizziness.

* Limit alcohol consumption. It slows the reflexes and makes it easier to lose your balance.
