* Re “War Crimes Tribunals Exact a High Cost,” Commentary, Nov. 29: I see no value in attempting to influence Saddam Hussein’s intransigence. If our government was willing to adopt Rachel Bronson’s policies, Saddam would become suspicious and decide to remain in power, continuing the repressive attitude to his people. However, the idea could be promoted for future dictatorial regimes as they evolve.

The concept of finding “safe passage deals” would probably lead to intensive negotiations and, although giving in to injustice, could lead to the resurrection of a country’s status. It is an idea to explore.
