Renegades of the L.A. Car Culture

Share

Thank you for your article on living car-free in L.A. (“Car-Free in L.A.: What a Concept,” Nov. 22). I have been living without a car in L.A. for more than 10 years, getting around almost entirely by bike. It’s not easy, but it’s possible. Of course, I can’t do everything I could do if I had a car, but also: no car payments or insurance, no repair bills, no parking problems, no road rage, no traffic jams and, best of all, no pollution!

Congratulations to Claudette Powell on her decision to live car free. Finally, someone else realizes that it is possible to live in L.A. without a car. I moved here from Manhattan 10 months ago and have been doing quite well without a car. I walk anywhere from one to three hours each day and feel great--I’ve even lost 10 pounds. When will Angelenos realize that if they walked for a fraction of the time they spend in their cars (or on their cell phones) the need for “stupid diet” books and expensive gym memberships will become obsolete?
