Proposed Papal Visit to Iraq Is Scrubbed

Pope John Paul II will not visit Iraq because Baghdad claims that it cannot arrange the visit, the Vatican said. A Vatican advance team recently traveled to Baghdad in anticipation of the pope’s trip next month, though no date had been set. A Vatican statement said Iraqi authorities had said that “abnormal conditions” resulting from a U.N. trade embargo and allied “no-fly” zones prevent Baghdad from adequately organizing a visit.
