Millennium Debate

Share

The debate over when the new millennium begins is all so much hullabaloo. Our calendar is supposed to go from the year of Christ’s birth, but scholars concluded many decades ago that the calendar is off by a few years, that Christ was born somewhere between 4 BC and 7 BC.

So guess what? We are past the year 2000, it is already the 21st century and we have been in it and the third millennium AD for some time now. Happy 2003-2007, whatever the real year will be!

If Robert Omohundro (letter, Dec. 13) were correct in his premise, “everything begins with zero,” then he would be correct in his conclusion: “Jan. 1, 2000 is the first day of the 21st century.” But he is not correct. There is no year zero. Perhaps he could prove me wrong by naming just one historical event that occurred in the year zero (and would that be zero AD or BC?).
