Domestic Violence

Re “Alcohol, Job Woes Cited in Domestic Violence,” Dec. 16: Real men are defenders of those weaker than themselves--never their tormentors. When will we stop making excuses for abusers of women and children and start holding them accountable for their behavior? Such men are nothing more than ignorant and insecure cowards.

Factors such as an impoverished and abused childhood, alcohol or drug dependency and low economic status may exist in abuse situations (and should be addressed by society) but are never valid excuses for such abuse. Many good people endure disadvantages in life without resorting to despicable behavior.
