Hoping for a Revival of Calvin and Hobbes

Share

I enjoyed reading the article (Dec. 21) by Bill Watterson about Charles M. Schulz and “Peanuts” (“Drawn Into a Dark but Gentle World”). When I reached the last paragraph, my thoughts came back to Bill Watterson because he had written: “Schulz has given all his readers a great gift, and my gratitude for that tempers my disappointment at the strip’s cessation.”

I am in my mid-60s and I have enjoyed reading the comics pages of the L.A. Times for most of my life. “Calvin and Hobbes” was my all-time favorite strip, hands down, no contest, no others need apply! One can only imagine my disappointment when Mr. Watterson decided that he was going to retire and stop drawing the strip.

Sure, he does a “Calvin and Hobbes” book now and then, but that just isn’t the same. It was a great comic strip and I loved it. I hope that Mr. Watterson gets bored with retirement and picks up his pen again.

Since I’m turning 51 on Dec. 31, I literally grew up with “Peanuts.” Bless you, Charles Schulz, for all your work over the decades and for sharing your creative gifts with all of us. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the wonderful strips over the years! They really warmed my heart on dreary mornings and during difficult times in my life.

My most vivid memory of Charles M. Schulz is when he would go down to the warm coffee shop at his ice-skating rink, taking a break from drawing his cartoons. Although he worked long hours, he always managed to give all the kids a smile and an autograph. Even when I was 7 years old, I was impressed with his kindness.

Not only did he provide fun comics for me to read daily, he gave me a safe place to practice my ice skating each Saturday. Now my absolute two favorite cartoonists are going to be retired: Charles M. Schulz and Bill Watterson. I guess I will never read the comics anymore. Thank you, Mr. Schulz and Mr. Watterson for years of enjoyment.
