Hurricanes’ Kapanen Gets 3-Year Extension

Sami Kapanen, one of the fastest and most skilled offensive players on the Carolina Hurricanes, agreed to a three-year contract extension with the club Monday that will be an average of about $2.2 million a season. His salary is now $650,000. Kapanen leads the Hurricanes this season with nine multipoint games and is third in points (34) and goals (14). . . . New Jersey defenseman Kevin Dean was hospitalized for observation after developing an irregular heartbeat during the Devils’ 2-2 tie with the Red Wings. . . . In the same game, the Red Wings’ Larry Murphy tied an NHL record for defensemen by playing in his 1,446th game. In the opening minutes, Murphy was knocked into the boards and suffered a concussion. He was able to skate off the ice.
