Politician Jailed in Free-Speech Case

A judge sentenced an opposition politician to seven days in jail for addressing a crowd without a police permit. Chee Soon Juan, head of the Singapore Democratic Party, argued that the law requiring the permit was unconstitutional and should not apply to political speech. A judge imposed a fine of $833 and, in lieu of payment, a seven-day prison sentence. Chee said earlier he would choose jail rather than pay the fine.
