Magazine for Moms Who Are With It

Share

Let’s say you are the single mom of a 3-year-old, living on welfare and struggling to graduate from college. What would you choose for your senior project?

Ariel Gore started a parenting magazine--hip Mama. And she not only got a degree (from the all-women Mills College), she also got a career.

That was 1993, but today hip Mama remains one of the hippest, mother-and-child-friendliest zines on the market. And now it’s on the Web as well at https://www.hipmama.com.

“This is a magazine for progressive moms,” says Gore, whose title on the masthead is editor-publisher girl. It’s also a magazine for the young, single and poor moms for whom it was founded.

A recent issue offers features on sibling rivalry as well as a letter about tattoos for breast-feeding women. Subscriptions for four issues a year cost $12 to $20. “You decide how much you can afford,” Gore says.
