A Navy destroyer and a much larger merchant ship collided early Friday in the Atlantic Ocean, leaving one sailor with a broken arm and damaging the bows of both ships.

The 563-foot Radford and the 657-foot container ship Saudi Riyadh bumped in the dark about 25 miles off Virginia Beach.

The ships headed for shore to be inspected.
