Has the family dog ever requested some home cooking? How about a home-cooked dog biscuit? No kidding.

Such delicious and interesting recipes dating back to the 19th century can be found in a 218-page cookbook the First Congregational Church of Buena Park sells for $10, said Nancy Sutton, the church’s secretary.

Additional recipes include the Knott’s Berry Farm boysenberry pie and Delmonico’s lyonnaise potatoes, a New York treat from 1888.

Recipes for diabetics are also featured. In fact, some “hints in regards to health” have been borrowed from the 1887 White House, Sutton said.

“We’ve tried many of the recipes here,” she said. “There are some that are good, ol’-fashioned cooking from scratch. Some are really easy and some are really entailed.”

There’s even a medicinal recipe from Mrs. J.A. Whitaker, wife of Buena Park’s founder, Sutton said.

Money generated from the sales will be used for youth camperships and other special church projects. To purchase, call (714) 522-4898 or (714) 522-1831 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.
