The county grand jury issued a report Tuesday recommending that crews that work for county and city municipalities and school districts stop using gasoline-powered leaf blowers. The report does not address the use of the leaf blowers in the private sector because the county watchdog group “does not have authority over private gardeners,” said foreman Sheldon S. Singer. “We’d love to put them in” however, he added.

The city of Los Angeles, which banned gas-powered blowers in the public and private sectors July 1, says “compliance is good, despite the fact that the police enforce violations as an infraction, which puts them as a low priority,” according to the report.

The grand jury cannot enforce its recommendation among school districts and municipalities. But the government representatives must state why they will not comply if they choose not to, Singer said.
