For 40 years, the Suicide Prevention Center Crisis Line has been helping people in need. Callers can talk to a trained volunteer who will provide emotional support and understanding.

If necessary, referrals will be given to other programs that can be of help, such as drug counseling or services for battered women.

The free service, offered by the Didi Hirsch Community Mental Health Center in Los Angeles, receives 16,000 calls a year.
