These excellent and accomplished Finnish musicians, stylishly and incisively conducted by Kangas, clarify Bach’s sometimes thick textures and bring buoyancy to every piece. Consequently, a supreme lightness colors all these cantatas for low voice; the results can shortchange, even contradict, the texts, which are seldom as jolly as these performances would attest. Groop brings a beautiful and pristine tone to all she sings, her approach being more instrumental than word-probing and her versatility admirable.
