From Times Wire Reports

President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah and his imprisoned rival said they had agreed to a seven-day cease-fire in the savage conflict that has littered the capital, Freetown, with dozens of bodies. The president spoke live on radio while rebel chief Foday Sankoh of the Revolutionary United Front--who has been on death row since October on a treason conviction--issued his orders in a recorded message. “Our combatants should keep to their defensive positions and cease all hostilities,” Sankoh told his forces. A military junta ruled Sierra Leone for 10 months after overthrowing Kabbah in 1997. Kabbah was reinstated by a West African intervention force in March.
