Question: When is the best time to plant azaleas and camellias, and what conditions do they require to thrive?

D.V.

Corona del Mar

Answer: The best time to plant azaleas and camellias is now, when they are in bloom. They are dormant when flowering, so you will not disturb vital root and branch development.

Camellias and azaleas bloom somewhere between October and May, depending on the variety.

Both shrub types prefer an area in partial or filtered shade. An ideal spot would be under the shade of an open tree (one that doesn’t have greedy shallow roots), under lath, next to a wall or on the northern side of the house. Remember, shrubs listed as “sun azaleas” can take more sun and interior heat than other types, but unless you live in a fog belt along the coast, they will struggle in full sun--especially if grown in a container.

Before planting azaleas and camellias, enrich the soil with an acidic-type amendment such as camellia and azalea mix. When you plant, be sure to keep the plant base above the soil line.

Both shrubs require good drainage and moisture retentive soil. Use mulch to help the soil retain water.

Camellias that are easy to grow on the coast or inland are ‘Debutante,’ ‘Pink Perfection,’ ‘Herme’ (Jordan’s Pride), ‘Lady Claire’ and ‘Ace of Hearts.’ Anemone and peony forms of camellias usually have trouble opening in coastal gardens because the winter tends to be too warm.

Camellia Sasanqua ‘Yuletide’ is a good choice, and it blooms just in time for the holidays.

Good varieties of azaleas to consider include ‘Alaska,’ ‘Avenir,’ ‘Red Wing’ (Red Bird), ‘Chimes,’ ‘Carnival Time,’ ‘California Sunset’ (inland only), ‘California Peach,’ ‘Nuccio’s Happy Days’ and ‘Rosa Belton.’

Fertilize azaleas only twice a year; once immediately after they finish blooming and again in late September. Fertilize camellias lightly three times a year--as soon as they finish blooming, four to six weeks later, and finally six weeks after that.

To maintain size, shape and increase blooms, prune camellias around May. At the same time, clean up and prune out ungainly branches on azaleas and pinch back tips to encourage bushiness.

Avoid disturbing the soil under either azaleas or camellias, even with your fingers, as delicate feeder roots can be easily damaged.
