Agran’s Proposed Airport Summit

Share

* Larry Agran’s simple yet cogent proposal for a Gov. Gray Davis-led summit to resolve regional airport wars throughout the Southland is so fundamentally grounded in common sense and fairness, it is hard to believe anyone would object (Orange County Voices, Jan. 17).

Perhaps knee-jerk Agran-haters or narrow special interests unconcerned with the broader public interest and residents’ worries would opt for continued community divisiveness and waste of vast amounts of resources for decades to come rather than entertain an Agran-originated proposal that might deliver for everyone.

An all-inclusive, two-day airport communities conference as outlined by Agran is brilliant in its simplicity and logic--and it just might work.

As Agran suggests, neither the governor nor anyone else loses anything by giving it a chance. Only those with axes to grind or opposed to a democratic approach to fairness could object. Let’s try.

* Irvine Councilman Larry Agran wants Gov. Gray Davis to initiate a summit and bring leaders together and talk about what to do with the El Toro property.

Agran claims, “It’s important that every community with a significant interest . . . be included in the conference.”

That is precisely what our government in Orange County tried to do on several occasions--have both South and North County representatives around the table--but South County cities refused to be a part of it.

I seem to remember one brave councilman from Irvine who courageously joined such a county committee but was forced to resign under enormous pressure from his residents and fellow South County government officials.

If Agran thinks the new plan is a good idea, it is most likely because he thinks it will somehow benefit his anti-airport goals.
