Kenneth Starr

It seems to me that if Kenneth Starr had stopped his investigation (Whitewater) when nothing credible was found, none of these proceedings would have even happened. The attempts to take down President Clinton by the Republicans exist only because Starr overstepped the boundaries of what he was originally hired to investigate. Everyone should think about that.

Re “It’s Starr’s Turn to Be Investigated,” Column Left, Jan. 26: Robert Scheer deserves a Pulitzer Prize for being one of the very few journalists who have explored the perjury trap sprung on President Clinton by Starr and an assortment of right-wing lawyers and senators. As some have pointed out, this whole illegitimate inquisition began with the appointment of Starr by Judge David Sentelle, after a meeting with [Republican] Sens. Jesse Helms and Lauch Faircloth. Starr’s subsequent collusion with lawyers associated with the Paula Jones case was just the beginning.

To now watch Rep. Henry Hyde bluster and whine about unfairness to the House kangaroo court is the final insult to the nation’s intelligence. It is the House managers and Starr who should be brought up on charges for abuse of power. Thank you, Robert Scheer!

In his last paragraph, Scheer wrote: “This is a man who has left a trail of destroyed reputations and broken lives while throwing the country into turmoil.”

Those words depict my feelings about William Jefferson Clinton to a T.

Right on, Mr. Scheer. Starr has been tracking and stalking President Clinton for years. How did we ever get from Whitewater to Monica Lewinsky? I guess Starr’s definition of the law is, if one charge doesn’t stick, find another (and another and another).

If it’s not about sex, why did Starr and Congress ask questions about sex?

So the climate in the hallowed Senate has now deteriorated to party-line voting (Jan. 27). To those senators who want to dismiss the trial, what alternative do you suggest for the president whose actions you continue to publicly condemn? Censure is only meaningful if the president acknowledges the perjury and obstruction charges and is truly contrite.

As nauseating as this circus is in the Senate, it pales in comparison to those hypocritical Congress members who preface their statements with “I deplore his conduct,” while offering no meaningful alternative to impeachment, and instead hold a pep rally for our ever-smug president, as if there is something to be proud of in any of this.

The most dangerous place in Washington today is not down a dark alley, but behind closed doors at the Senate.
