Survival Is the Common Theme in Gurza’s Columns

Share

* Mike Edwards’ June 27 comments regarding Agustin Gurza’s columns depict Gurza’s common theme as one of “victimhood.”

I offer an amended perspective: The common theme of Gurza’s columns is survival.

After working for more than 10 years with men, women and teens in substance abuse and domestic violence prevention programs, I was wisely corrected and came to understand that those who seek recovery and turn their lives around are no longer victims. They are survivors, and that is what some of Gurza’s columns characterize.

I have not missed any of his columns. His themes portray the diversity as well as the critical issues in the Latino communities of Orange County.

His writing reflects a broad perspective of issues and is concise, witty, compassionate, and sometimes tinged with humorous, satiric sarcasm.
