I think we are taking this ethnic diversity and political correctness a bit too far! On two different occasions, when my wife and I called Pac Bell about a wrong number, we had to listen and wait for the computer-generated response partly in Chinese. After a wait we were connected to a person who spoke Mandarin but could speak English. We then had to wait again to be transferred to someone to speak English to us. We don’t speak Chinese. Indeed, I speak more Spanish.

Pac Bell denied that we were stereotyped because of my surname. If not so, then why choose Mandarin instead of Greek? If they want to help, allow the customer to choose by calling or writing in a request, not assume something which is illogical. Good intentions poorly implemented are a pain.
