Macy’s West said Wednesday it will expand and renovate its store at the Shops at Mission Viejo.

The 120,000-square-foot store will be expanded by 60,000 square feet on the side closest to Crown Valley Parkway. The interior will be upgraded with new lighting, floors and fixtures, the San Francisco-based company said.

“This store expansion will allow us to increase our merchandise assortments and add more status brands in line with the exciting changes at the Shops at Mission Viejo and the dramatic growth in south Orange County,” Macy’s Chairman Michael Steinberg said in a statement.

The center, formerly known as the Mission Viejo Mall, is undergoing a major renovation that will boost its size by 45%. The new section of the mall will open Sept. 1.

Macy’s renovations are scheduled to begin next spring and should be complete a year later.

Macy’s West is owned by Cincinnati-based Federated Department Stores Inc.
