The city is applying for a $353,000 federal grant to create a gang prevention program. The 15-week program would combine recreational activities with informal discussion groups aimed at changing kids’ attitudes toward gangs, as well as classes to help parents become more involved in their children’s lives. If approved by the federal Department of Health and Human Services, the two-year pilot program would start in the fall and have three sessions per year, said Douglas Kent, director of research and planning for the Police Department. The city is working with the Westminster School District and two community services agencies, St. Anselm’s Cross-Cultural Community Center of Garden Grove and Abrazar Inc. of Westminster, on the program.
