BUENA PARK

When David Michael Anthony, a 33-year-old who aims to compete in cycling at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, returned to Newport Beach this week from a cross-country bicycle journey, he received a surprise: 500 pounds of tuna. It seems Pastor Wiley S. Drake of First Southern Baptist Church of Buena Park heard that Anthony helped the homeless through donations he received during his journey. Drake, who has long battled the city over housing the homeless at his church, donated the tuna because Anthony eats about two pounds of it a day.

Anthony has since left on a 5,000-mile trek, trailing a cart of his belongings--including the tuna--behind his bicycle. The tuna was but a small portion of a 5,000-pound donation Drake received from a local supermarket about three months ago.

“This was an opportunity for us to help out, and our homeless people to help out other homeless people,” Drake said. Those who wish to help the homeless through Anthony may do so online at https://www.800hungry2.org,
