India Resumes Airstrikes in Kashmir

Indian warplanes resumed their bombing campaign against heavily armed intruders in the disputed region of Kashmir on Sunday as troops moved up snow-covered mountains to push the guerrillas back over the military control line with Pakistan.

India launched an air offensive May 26 to rout what it says was an armed incursion into Indian territory in Kashmir. Two-thirds of Kashmir is occupied by India; the rest, by Pakistan.

The bombing resumed after a pause Saturday to allow ground forces to take up positions in Dras and Batalik, where hundreds of intruders are concentrated. India claims that the infiltrators include Pakistani soldiers.

Press Trust of India said Sunday that four civilians were hurt on the Indian side in shelling by Pakistan across the Line of Control. Defense officials said the two sides exchanged shelling attacks.
