Chamber Orchestra Plans 8 Programs

“Made in California” is the theme of Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra’s 1999-2000 subscription season, which will offer eight programs in 15 performances divided between Royce Hall at UCLA and the Alex Theatre in Glendale. Music Director Jeffrey Kahane will conduct six programs.

American baritone Jubilant Sykes, a California native from Venice, is the featured soloist in the opening program, to be given once, at 7 p.m. Sept. 25 in Royce Hall. Kahane will conduct.

For the performances of Oct. 16 and 17, guest conductor Richard Hickox will lead music by Haydn, Britten, R. Strauss and Mozart, with contralto soloist Pamela Stephen.

Kahane conducts Bach’s five “Brandenburg” Concertos at Royce Hall Nov. 19 and at the Alex Theatre Nov. 20.

Helmuth Rilling is guest conductor Dec. 10 and 11, leading Haydn’s “The Creation.” The USC Chamber Singers assist.

Opening the new year, Kahane conducts works by Stravinsky, Chopin and R. Strauss Jan. 21-22, with Christopher O’Riley playing Chopin’s F-minor Piano Concerto.

Music by Revueltas, Lou Harrison, Mendelssohn and Haydn make up the Feb. 25 and 26 program, with LACO concertmaster Margaret Batjer sharing solo duties with conductor-pianist Kahane. The music director’s program for March 24 and 25 lists music by Copland, Enesco, Ravel and Dvorak.

The season will close April 21 and 22 with music by Mozart, Hindemith and R. Strauss, played by soloists Douglas Davis (cello), David Shostac (flute), Richard Todd (horn) and Kahane (piano).
