Powerful, Pleasant Water Means Love

Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Dear Cynthia: For the last five months, I have had recurring dreams about water--powerful, moving water, like swirling rapids, huge surf, or water released by a dam. I am always in the middle of the water, but I am never in any way afraid. Instead, I’m awe-struck by the water’s power and beauty.

Sometimes the water engulfs me, but it is always pleasant and warm--something of a surprise. Always, the experience is wonderful, almost joyous. Usually there are other people around, and we all seem to be aware that the water could be threatening, but no one gets harmed in any way.

I am wondering what the significance of this dream might be.

Dear Reader: As dream detective, I suspect that something of an emotional nature changed in your life about five months ago.

Water in dreams is often associated with emotions, and judging from the adjectives you use to describe the water in your dreams--powerful, moving, pleasant, warm, etc.--it would appear that you have undergone a very positive change. “Awe-struck by the power and the beauty,” “wonderful, almost joyous” . . . Sounds to me like you are newly in love.

The presence of others in your dream may mean that this is a social situation, or that others are witnessing your new situation. Perhaps you are joining the ranks of those willing to take the risk of opening their hearts to love. You realize that there is a risk in opening your heart this way, but your dreams assure you that no one gets hurt.

If you previously were hesitant to get involved in a loving relationship, or if your existing relationship has taken a deeper turn, this interpretation certainly would apply. Even if you are not in a love relationship, there nevertheless seems to have been a major and positive emotional change of some sort. Perhaps you are plunging into your career, or your friendships, with new abandon.
