When it contemplated supporting a state Senate bill on gun control at its meeting Monday, the City Council received an earful from anti-gun control advocates. Many of the speakers grew outraged when Mayor Tracy Wills Worley cut the amount of time during which they could give testimony to the City Council. Police officers were then told to remove those who spoke out of turn. Senate Bill 23 would define an assault weapon as a firearm that has a large-capacity magazine or that fires more than 10 rounds. The council eventually voted 4 to 1 to suggest that legislators rewrite the bill to clarify it so that it can be upheld in court. Councilman Thomas R. Saltarelli, a real estate lawyer, said the bill was “very poorly written” and said he could not support it. He added that the item should not have come before the council because it isn’t a local issue.
