As part of its crusade for eco-sensitive gardening practices, the city of Los Angeles is offering a free “Smart Gardening Workshop” on Saturday in Northridge.

The workshop will include instruction in water-wise gardening, composting and grass recycling, along with other environmental tips. Backyard composting bins will be available at a discounted price of $20 with proof of city residency.

The workshop is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The location is Cal State Northridge, Faculty Parking Lot C at the corner of Zelzah Avenue and Nordhoff Street.

“Most residents don’t realize how their gardening practices can affect the health of the environment and the ocean,” said Lupe M. Vela, city recycling manager. “This workshop will offer many ways to keep gardens beautiful and protect the environment at the same time.”
