The mayor of this capital, facing a tide of public indignation over rising crime, vowed Wednesday to bring the killers of a popular television personality to justice.

“We have nothing to hide and nobody to protect,” Mayor Cuauhtemoc Cardenas told the Televisa network. “We are going to pursue this investigation to the end.”

Game show host Francisco “Paco” Stanley was riddled with bullets Monday as he sat in his car on one of the capital’s main thoroughfares.

The public’s widespread revulsion at the ability of gunmen to act with impunity in broad daylight was soon mingled with dismay after investigators found traces of cocaine in Stanley’s body. A cocaine grinder, used for preparing the drug, was found in his luxury car.

Stanley also was carrying a gun permit that falsely identified him as a federal employee. Interior Ministry officials said the permit was issued because Stanley had been robbed several times and apparently had received threats.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said it had no knowledge of any links between Stanley and drug traffickers.
