Glavine Sharp, Johnson Isn’t as Braves Roll

From Associated Press

Tom Glavine may be a struggling left-hander this season, but Sunday night at Phoenix, Randy Johnson was the left-hander that was getting bombed.

Johnson gave up four home runs for the first time in his career, including two by Javier Lopez, and the Atlanta Braves defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 10-4, at Bank One Ballpark.

Johnson (9-3), who had won five consecutive decisions since May 20, gave up seven earned runs for the first time since July 8. His ERA went from 2.96 to 3.36.

“It was a case of not very good location,” Johnson said. “You make bad pitches to good hitters and the result is going to be they’re going to hit the ball a long way.”

Glavine (5-7) won his second consecutive start after losing three in a row. He threw 40 pitches and walked three in the first inning. He gave up single runs in the first, second and third, then shut out the Diamondbacks on one hit the next three innings.

San Francisco 7, Chicago 6--Armando Rios hit a sacrifice fly to tie the score and Wilson Delgado singled in the winner as the Giants rallied with two in the ninth inning to complete their first four-game sweep of the Cubs since 1991.

San Francisco trailed, 6-5, entering the bottom of the ninth. J.T. Snow drew a leadoff walk from Rick Aguilera (3-3) and Stan Javier reached on a fielder’s choice. Pinch-hitter F.P. Santangelo sacrificed, and Brent Mayne was intentionally walked to load the bases for Rios and Delgado.

Colorado 8, Florida 7--Larry Walker hit a three-run home run and Todd Helton added a two-run shot as the Rockies defeated the Marlins for the eighth consecutive time, completing a three-game sweep at Denver.

Walker was two for four and went seven for 13 in the series with three homers and eight runs batted in. Helton was one for two with a walk and two RBIs and was eight for 11 with four homers and eight RBIs in the series.

New York 9, St. Louis 6--Rey Ordonez scored from second on infield hits twice and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as the Mets won at St. Louis.

The Mets took three of four and have won 11 of 14 following an eight-game losing streak. New York overcame a 6-2 deficit and Mark McGwire’s second three-run homer in as many games. He has 21.

Mike Piazza went two for five to extend his hitting streak to 23 games, one shy of the Met record set by Hubie Brooks in 1984.

Milwaukee 7, Cincinnati 4--Geoff Jenkins put the Brewers ahead with a two-run double in the eighth and Jose Valentin added a two-run homer as they rallied for a victory at Cincinnati.

Jeff Cirillo, who earlier homered, started the go-ahead rally in the eighth with a leadoff walk from Scott Sullivan. Dennis Reyes relieved and gave up a single by Jeromy Burnitz and a two-run double to center by Jenkins.

Houston 11, Montreal 3--Chris Holt won for the first time since August 1997, and Carl Everett hit a grand slam and solo homer as he drove in a career-high six runs to lead the Astros over the Expos for a three-game sweep at Houston.
