Veteran rocker Tom Petty, in a nod to the explosion of the Web as a musical medium, is releasing his latest single via MP3.com, where it can be downloaded for free. “Free Girl Now,” a track off Petty’s upcoming album with the Heartbreakers, “Echo,” was made available at https://www.MP3.com Monday. The single is not yet on sale in stores. The technology used at the site has become controversial in the recording industry because it makes it easy for music to be pirated.
